Congratulations to Danny Byrne from Olympic FC who is our Total Compression NPL Player of the Month for June 2016.
The heart and soul of Olympic’s senior team over many years, being at the club during its good and not-so-good years, the inspirational captain has been a major contributor in the turn-around of his side’s fortunes during June.
Upon receiving the award, Byrne pinpointed the reasons behind the pick-up in form in recent weeks.
“We’ve always had the individuals at the club. Terry’s (Kirkham) come in and sorted out the team. He’s got a lot more structure in place. Every individual is working well and that’s lifted things and there’s plenty of spots to play for now. There’s been some new boys come in as well and that has also lifted things.”
“You see it when new gaffers come in around the world. He’s come in and changed the training regime. Everyone’s fitness levels have been raised. It’s been noticeable during games especially with the results we’ve had.”
After sitting in second-last spot for much of the first half of the season, Byrne wasn’t prepared to let finals hopes slip just yet. Post-season action remains a real possibility with Olympic currently sitting in sixth spot just three points off fourth after a massive win against the Brisbane Strikers on Saturday night.
“It (finals) was the goal at the start and it remains the goal until it’s mathematically impossible. We don’t fear anyone, we come to games and do our jobs. We’ve got that belief now that if we come and do our jobs knowing that we can, three points is a big possibility from each of the games that we play.”
Pressed about what his future may hold in store, including whether he might play another season at the club he has such passion for, he responded, “If you’d asked me that question seven or eight games in, I’d have probably said no but the way I’m feeling now and the fitness levels I’ve got I’m more than likely to play on.”
“Obviously I want to be a part of football in any capacity. Being at the club, I’ve been here a long time. I’d like to continue that and give back to the juniors in terms of coaching and that’s what I definitely want to do.”
From everyone at QSN and Total Compression, congratulations Danny on your award.
