Congratulations to Dan Smith from Holland Park Hawks who has been judged by our panel to be the Total Compression Brisbane Premier League Player of the Month for June 2016.
Smith impressed the panel with his consistent efforts in the Hawks backline which has resulted in him being a major contributor in his club’s current success, sitting third on the table after consecutive promotions up the Football Brisbane hierarchy.
Whilst a defender, he is the Hawks spot kick and dead ball specialist seeing him contribute six goals to the league tally, current equal top scorer at the club.
With plenty of pedigree on his side after playing professionally for Sutherland in the English Premier League and in the Scottish Premier League with Aberdeen, some of scratched their heads as to how a player of that calibre could end up in Brisbane but as Smith explains, he was looking for a change in pace.
“One of the lads that played here when we were in Capital Two, Luke Proctor, gave me a heads-up that they were looking for players. The President of the club was an Aberdeen fan and he found out that I could be interested in coming over and asked whether I wanted to play for the Hawks and I said yeah.”
“I wanted a bit of a lifestyle change. Initially I only came over on a twelve-month visa and did so to see what it was like and I fell in love with the place. Hopefully I’ll get my permanent visa this time next year and then get citizenship.”
The Hawks share a tight bond amongst their squad which has seen them exceed most people’s expectations for this season and Smith is quite quick to deflect any personal accolades onto the remainder of the squad.
“On a personal note, I’ve done well in the past few months and managed to get a few goals which have been fairly crucial.”
“More important, I think the team has had a really good season since we’ve come up from Capital One. (Making the) top four is the aim now. I think it’s at the point now where we can’t really slip. I think we’ve got the squad to make the top four and I think we just need to maintain the form that we’ve had through the season.”
The next hurdle in that aim will be a local derby with the Hawks to travel to Heath Park on Saturday night to take on Easts, another side looking to feature in post-season action. Kickoff for that match is at 7pm.
