Total Compression NPL Player of the Month – Ben Litfin (Gold Coast City) – May 2016

litfin solo croppedCongratulations to Gold Coast City’s Ben Litfin who has been named the Total Compression NPL Player of the Month for May 2016. The judging panel was impressed with his contribution to his side’s run during May where they suffered just the one defeat.

A native of the Gold Coast, his return so far this season has been nine goals to put him third in the NPL Golden Boot race. With plenty of elite experience behind him in stints in Gold Coast representative teams, the Queensland Academy of Sport and Brisbane Roar, it’s little wonder that he has found himself winning such an award.

Litfin has had to adapt to a slightly different role this year at Gold Coast City as he explains.

“At the Roar, I was very much a deep player and I brought that in when I joined the NPL last year. This year with the players coming in, I’m playing a little higher and I’ve played attacking midfielders a lot during my career. I do like playing there. For me personally, that’s what I’ve done differently, a more attacking role and I’ve really enjoyed that.”

When assessing his side’s chances for this year, he was enthusiastic about them being in the running at the business end of the season despite not gathering the amount of wins they would have liked to have achieved.

“We definitely have the players to do something good this year. From the start of the season, we’ve had the players to win the league but things just haven’t clicked just yet. We’ve been in really good positions where we’ve just conceded a really easy goal or two and drawn games we really should have won. The belief in the camp though is that we can still win the league.”

Still retaining ambitions of getting back to an A-League club, Litfin was brutally honest in the assessment of his current form.

“I feel like I can do a lot better than I am at the moment. I’d like to drop a little deeper so I can help out the defence and help out going forward at the same time. I feel like if I get the opportunity in that position, I can do a lot there. Deep down, I’d like to play professionally (again).”

Ben’s Gold Coast City face a tough test this weekend as they travel up the M1 to meet the Brisbane Strikers at Perry Park. Kickoff is at 6pm on Saturday night.
