Two goals to Greg Cheshire and one from substitute Jarryd Gore has sealed a 3-0 win to Rochedale Rovers over Capalaba in their Brisbane Premier League clash on Saturday night.

A defensive error in the Capalaba defence attempting to play out from the back lead to the home side’s first goal. Cheshire was able to gather the loose ball and with only Capalaba keeper Sam Chandler to beat, was able to successfully navigate around him and place into an open net from near six yards.

Both sides were then forced into early substitutions. Firstly the Bulldogs when Luke Watson went off and then Rochedale made a change midway through the first half. With key players Phil Davies and Scott Sargent missing the match, right back Daryll Grant was stretchered off with what appeared to be either a lower back or hip injury.

Chances were few and far between in what was a battle of the respective midfields that Rochedale were able to edge.

On the half hour though, Capalaba’s Sam Fellows was able to get in behind the defensive line and size up Rochedale gloveman Brandon Cuminao who blocked the shot.

Rochedale’s second came from the next phase of play. After the referee initially ruled a goal kick, he received further advice from his assistant and changed the decision to a Rochedale corner. From the corner, Capalaba were unable to clear within the six-yard box and Gore was on hand in the crowded box to make it 2-0.

A chance for Capalaba to reduce the deficit on the halftime break came when an attempted Rochedale defensive clearance went wrong. Tim Dunn was able to find a way through the mess but Cuminao was on hand to stop the Bulldogs getting on the board.

In the ten-minute period of the resumption after the halftime break, Cheshire had two opportunities to extend his side’s lead. Firstly Gore passed on for him and with Chandler still down on the ground after punching away an earlier save, he couldn’t take advantage of the situation.

A minute later, Cheshire broke free of the defensive line and found himself one-on-one with Chandler but the Capalaba custodian shut down the play.

If there were any doubts that Capalaba thought they were out of the match, they certainly didn’t show with Andy Thompson sending a bullet just wide of the post before Yuji Hirayama forced Cuminao into a wonderful save.

The killer blow to any Bulldogs comeback resulted when Cheshire once again was able to exploit the defensive line and his one-on-one with Chandler was rewarded this time.

Further salt was rubbed into the wounds when Capalaba were reduced to ten men with Sam Fellows dismissal in the 77th minute.

Cheshire almost collected a hat-trick in the dying minutes only to be denied by Chandler.

The win will almost certainly see Rochedale back in the top four come the round’s end.
