Acacia Ridge deployed their dangerous attacking firepower to beat New Farm United 3 -1 in a clinical display.
Ridge have been a revelation since being promoted to Cap 2 and the win moves them into equal first on the ladder.
The two sides met at a vastly improved New Farm Park. Well done to New Farm United who have put a considerable amount of work into bringing the ground up to a better standard.
In just a short space of time the two clubs have already created a heated rivalry that has resulted in a controversial draw and a semi-final decided on penalties, only for the result to be overturned due to Ridge fielding an illegible player.
They have both come through the ranks at a flying pace, with Ridge gaining a back-to-back promotion and the Farmers managing to reach Cap 2 in just 3 years.
For teams that have known each other well their tactics haven’t altered a great deal since their time in Cap 3.
Ridge have some incredible fire power up front in Juan Jaimes (leading goal scorer in capital leagues last year), Luka Ilic and Sho Yoshimura (who transferred from Kangaroo Point in the off-season), all of whom could be playing at a higher level. They look to utilise this at every chance with a lot of long balls to the head or chest of Ilic, who then passes of to Jaimes. Very few teams manage to shut this down.
The Farmers have a grinding style of play where they seem to upset the rhythm of their opposition and work their way forward in attack.
Despite it being 2 – 0 at half time it was reasonably even with both teams creating clear chances. The difference was Ridge’s clinical finishing. Firstly by Jaimes in the 9th minute as he received a long ball to his feet 30 metres out, beat his defender with lightning pace and then tucked the ball under the reach of the Farm keeper and into the bottom left corner. Their second came in very similar circumstances but this time Ilic beat his defender before slotting it past the keeper in the bottom left corner. The Farmers struggled to hold possession for long periods and struggled to break down the centre back pairing of Ridge.
Although there was a number of chances and goals in the first half there was still a lot of lost possession in the midfield by both teams. This improved in the second half and the game opened up. New Farm probably looked the better team for the first 10 minutes of the second half and created a number of chances. But the game looked to be Ridge’s when Ilic got his double in the 67th minute.
Simon Hodgson scored a great goal 10 minutes later and to New Farm’s credit they didn’t drop off and continued to push right until the end.
The Farmers have put in a decent account of themselves this year since being promoted and are sitting mid table, based on tonight’s effort they will probably struggle to make finals but will stay up this year.
This game showed just how much the quality of the capital leagues has improved given they haven’t had significant changes in personnel or tactics and have been highly competitive in a higher league.
Man of the match: Juan Jaimes – defenders looked worried whenever he had the ball at his feet, and with good reason given his ability to shoot from anywhere and his speed.
