Bulldogs overturn weekend result to remain alive in FFA Cup

IMG_3529Capalaba have scored an extra time victory on Wednesday night, overturning a 3-2 weekend league loss to Peninsula Power to defeat the same opposition 5-4 at AJ Kelly Park.

A hat-trick to Ahamad Azzawi had everyone talking as he lead the Bulldogs to victory withstanding late drama from Peninsula who fought until the final whistle.

Capalaba started the better and that was reflected when Liam Fisher headed over the bar after being played in from a dead-ball opportunity.

That should have provided warning signals for the home side and so it was a minute later that the Bulldogs would open the scoring. After a contentious non-call for offside that stopped the Peninsula defenders waiting for the whistle to be blown, Sam Fellows took advantage putting past keeper Brad Burrows.

Peninsula were spurred into action after conceding with Charles Mendy going on a run into the box where he passed for Kado Aoci whose shot was deflected out for a corner.

Capalaba had a chance to double their advantage when Yuji Hirayama was brought down just outside the box. The resulting free kick skewed over the bar.

The hosts had their own free kick chance shortly after. Played on by Trent McEvoy for Mendy with his effort deflected off a defender and then the post for a corner. From that, Brent Holden headed on goal only to be denied by a splendid save from Sam Chandler.

That started a string of remarkable saves from Chandler with McEvoy and Strickland and Jared Austin all shut out.

Finally the pressure told on the Capalaba defensive line. Chandler pulling off another save to block Austin but that was deflected straight back into the path of Mitch Buhmann who slotted the equaliser.

Power looked set to go into the break with the advantage when the defence anticipated that Aoci would receive the ball inside the box but instead it was Tom Strickland who was able poke to past Chandler.

However, Capalaba leveled terms in stoppage time with Azzawi getting the final touch.

After the resumption, Azzawi continued to assert his influence on the match making a jinking run inside the box that was ended by David Salin’s intervention.

Chandler came to the fore again when Mendy was provided perfect delivery from Austin, the gloveman on hand to make a low save to deny the Frenchman.

Mendy succumbed to injury and was forced to be replaced in a match-turning moment.

Strickland had his side’s nose ahead midway through the second half, again with Aoci playing decoy.

Azzawi found side netting shortly after before he headed in from within the six-yard box after latching onto an Andy Thompson free kick.

Aoci produced heroics in an attempt to prevent the match from going into extra time with a bicycle kick that could only be stopped by the crossbar.

Who else would break the deadlock in the extra period than Azzawi with his third as he confused the Power defence, strolling toward goal.

Strickland had the opportunity to grab his third but was unable to dip a free kick under the bar in time.

Capalaba could have sealed victory in the 110th minute but a fine save from Burrows kept his side in the contest.

Azzawi provided the assist when the winner did come through Delors Tuyishime two minutes later.

Or at least it looked like the winner with another late twist in the match. Aoci was brought down in the box resulting in a Power penalty. Austin seeing his attempt saved by Chandler.

It wasn’t over just yet with Ryosuke Kawakami providing late drama to pull one back with just over sixty seconds remaining but thankfully for the Bulldogs, the whistle blew shortly after to ensure progress through to round five.
