IMG_2914UQFC and Logan Lightning went away from their Friday night Brisbane Premier League match with their undefeated starts to the season intact after a 1-1 draw.

A controversial penalty call by the assistant referee that was converted by UQFC’s Yoshi Sakurai was cancelled out by a late equaliser from Josep Baldovi.

Logan held the early ascendency penetrating their attacking half on a number of occasions in the first ten minutes but ultimately without result despite a wonderful early cross from Richard Greer that narrowly slid in front of Alex Warrilow.

Josh Sherwood was lively up front for Logan in the opening exchanges and forced UQFC keeper Linus Schibler into a diving save to his right just after ten minutes,

Referee Jim Bellos was forced into a decision on the quarter hour when Jae Joo delivered a long ball into the box for Michael Van Gend. A collision between he and Logan keeper Nick Moore occurred just inside the box but Bellos made the right decision in waving away any penalty claims.

The students slowly worked their way into the match from there, Loic David saved at his feet by Moore.

The sides continued to trade opportunities, the best going Logan’s way when Alex Warrilow delivered a long cross for Baldovi who shot first time but was denied by Schibler.

Five minutes from halftime, Joo almost pulled off the spectacular launching an audacious effort from 25 yards out that Moore tipped onto the post.

Moore was again brought into the action when Hamish Maguire forced the gloveman into a sharp save neat half time.

Both sides struggled to get the ball out of their respective midfield in the early part after the restart but when the opportunities did come, it was UQFC who had the better of them. Stewart Croll and Sakurai having chances blocked by the Logan defence.

The tone of the match changed when Moore was deemed to have brought down substitute James Barr in the box but who was angling away from goal. The assistant flagged the penalty that drew widespread protests from the visitors.

Sakurai stood up to take the spot kick that he drilled straight down the middle to break the deadlock with twenty minutes remaining.

That spurred Logan into action in search of a result as Kostovski headed over the bar from close range before Greer tried a free kick variation for Josh Sherwood that the home side blocked.

Just when it seemed that UQFC would collect all three points, Baldovi scored courtesy of an unfortunate keeping mistake from Schibler, the ball going between the legs of the UQFC custodian.

A frenetic stoppage time period ensued but both sides left Walton Bridge Reserve with a point.
