The draw for Peninsula Power’s pre-season Macron Cup has been released with this year’s tournament aiming for quality rather than quantity.
Last year’s tournament in particular was plagued by lopsided scorelines as clubs looked at also getting matchday legs into reserves and youth players. That forced a rethink from tournament organisers and rather than having eight participating clubs as has been the case in previous seasons, this year’s version will showcase four high-quality clubs across four matchdays.
As well as being tournament hosts, Peninsula are the Brisbane Premier League Grand Final winners for the previous three years. The three other competing clubs are from the NPL and are the three previous winners of both the Premiership and Grand Final in that competiton. Olympic achieved the feat in 2013, Gold Coast City (as Palm Beach) in 2014 and Moreton Bay from 2015.
The draw for each matchday is as follows with opening day featuring a rematch of the 2014 NPL Grand Final and what should be a keenly contested derby.
Saturday 23 January
5pm Olympic v Gold Coast City
7pm Peninsula v Moreton Bay
Saturday 30 January
5pm Peninsula v Gold Coast City
7pm Moreton Bay v Olympic
Saturday 6 February
5pm Moreton Bay v Gold Coast City
7pm Peninsula v Olympic
The final matchday on Saturday 13 February will feature the 3rd v 4th playoff at 4pm and the Grand Final at 6pm.
Normally we’d give you our top five matches that you shouldn’t miss but with the quality of this year’s tournament, every match is well worth getting along to see.
QSN will bring you all the ins and outs of the Cup commencing on 23 January.
