After a brief sojourn in Victoria, former Brisbane Striker Jason Shade returns to Queensland with Brisbane Premier League club Mitchelton securing the central defender for 2016.

Hailing originally from Far North Queensland where he played for Mareeba United and Stratford Dolphins, he was also a part of the Brisbane Roar during the formative years of the National Youth League.

In announcing his signing, incoming Mitchelton coach Leo Sirianni explained the connection that brought Shade to the club, “I became aware that Jason was potentially returning to Queensland for work and I had a chat with the Slevin brothers (former Mitchelton players Corey and Karl) who played with Jason at Bendigo City.

“As a defender, he’s played at the highest level. We’re looking for a ball-playing central defender, he’s quick and someone who can play out from the back. He’s a good acquisition for what we want to do.”

After taking an almost three-year sabbatical from the game in 2011, mainly due to injury, Shade returned to the Brisbane Strikers in 2014 where he played fifteen matches before linking up with a host of Queenslanders under former Lions FC player Greg Thomas at Victorian NPL 1 West club, Bendigo City in 2015.

Sirianni hinted that he is in the market for more potential high-quality signings with the coaching staff keeping an eye on a number of players from near and far that will assist in his aim of making Mitchie’s second year in the BPL, one of consolidation.

Mitchelton open their pre-season preparations on Saturday 9 January against fellow BPL club North Pine. The Mustangs will also compete in the upcoming Lions FC BLK Silver Boot pre-season competition. Further details about the club’s schedule leading into the season proper will be available in the coming weeks.
