Brisbane Premier League – The Run Home

The Brisbane Premier League is reaching its conclusion and here is our look at the run home and predictions on how the final four weeks of the season will pan out.

Lions FC v Mitchelton – Lions Stadium, Richlands. Sunday 26th July 2015

This encounter will go a long way in deciding who will win the Premier League title. Lions are in the box seat with a six point lead at the top after Mitchelton dropped points at the weekend. A Mitchelton win will see them close the gap to three points with three games to play.

Realistically Eastern Suburbs are the only team that can be caught by the chasing pack in Rochedale and Logan but with the Tigers in fine form at the moment it will be a tough ask. Easts have a six point lead over Rochedale and Logan with four to play and would have to lose pretty much three out of the four not to make finals football.

Eastern Suburbs – UQFC (H), Mitchelton (A), Wolves (H) Taringa (A)

RochedaleWolves (H), Taringa (A), Capalaba (H), Ipswich Knights (A)

LoganAlbany Creek (H), UQFC (A), Mitchelton (H), Wolves (A)

Taringa look like they will have an immediate return to the second tier of Brisbane Football as they sit 57 points off tenth placed Wolves and with only four rounds remaining in the Club Championship, it is going to be a huge struggle to bridge that gap.

Wolves FC are putting on a great escape at the moment with the reserves and first side picking up some vital wins in recent weeks. That has moved the club out of the bottom two for the first time all year.

UQFC have slipped in to the bottom two for the first time after a horrible run of results for the first squad who have lost the past four and with the reserves also dropping points recently, it has seen the club slide into deep trouble.

Capalaba have mounted a bit of a revival in recent weeks getting some vital wins in the Reserves and since Geoff Hurford has taken charge, the seniors have been picking up some vital wins.

Ipswich Knights and Albany Creek can still be dragged into the dog fight but have a 25-30 point lead with just four games to go. With some of the sides down the bottom still having to face off against each other, these two clubs may be able to avoid the drop.

Club Championship Points Totals after Round 18

Taringa 166

UQFC 206

Wolves 213

Capalaba 219

Ipswich Knights 231

Albany Creek 235

Taringa –  Ipswich (A), Rochedale (H), Lions (A), Easts (H)

UQFC – Easts (A), Logan (H), Albany Creek (A), Peninsula (H)

Wolves – Rochedale (A), Lions (H), Easts (A), Logan (H)

Capalaba – Peninsula (A), Ipswich Knights (H), Rochedale (A), Lions (H)

  • Lions will win the title.
  • Top 4 (in order): Lions, Mitchelton, Peninsula, Easts.
  • Relegation: Taringa and UQFC. It just seems a bridge too far for Taringa and given the fact their remaining matches sees them play two of the top four, remaining in the Premier League will be an uphill feat. UQFC also have to play two of the top four and another side in the top half of the table in Logan. It looks likely that UQFC and Wolves will be in the tussle for the second relegation spot.
