BRISBANE – CAPITAL 1 | Annerley upset North Pine in a 90 minute thriller

By Joseph Ogilvie |

Ladder leaders North Pine have been handed a 2 – 1 defeat by Annerley in Brisbane’s Capital 1 League tonight at Elder Oval.

Based on results and ladder positions this should have been a one sided affair; North Pine sitting on top and Annerley sitting down in tenth.

North Pine have been dominating the competition this season suffering only one defeat.

Aside from the result against North Star, Annerley’s games have been close all year and they were coming off a solid win against cellar dwellers Brisbane Force last week.

The game started as a tight affair as both sides displayed solid defensive structure and a good passing game.

There were no real clear cut chances until a penalty was awarded to the Gorillas in the 28th minute; the North Pine player put a bit too much on his attempted conversion and it ended up wide of the goal.

This was rectified in the 31st minute, when North Pine’s Glen Batticciotto put away a well crossed ball.

Only a few minor chances came of the rest of the half as both sides went to the sheds with the visitors leading 1 – 0.

It remained a tightly fought contest for much of the second half but Annerley looked most dangerous when Jaymes O’Brien had the ball at his feet on the break.

North Pine had a few chances from set pieces but failed to find the back of the net.

There was a clear lift from Annerley in the last twenty minutes, then in the 86th minute they were able to equalise through Nick Klaassen who put away an O’Brien cross.

The momentum continued to turn heavily in Annerley’s favour and in the 90th minute O’Brien again found Klaassen, who put Annerley in front with only injury time to play.

North Pine dominated much of the game but credit must go to Annerley who hung in and pressed hard in the last twenty minutes to walk away with three points.

The result will no doubt please the chasing pack and shakes up the whole league.

Annerley sung their team song loud and clear, the result sees them move well clear of the relegation zone and notches two wins on the trot.
