Brisbane – Trophy Superstore Premier League Round 9 Wrap

By Merson Kean – Brisbane Correspondent

This week we saw a controversial ending that probably hasn’t be seen before, a classic topsy-turvy game and two thrashings as the Trophy Superstore Premier lived up to its expectations.

Logan were much fancied going into their affair with UQFC but the students had other ideas as they claimed a very precious point at Chris Green Park. Logan started with attacking intent but UQFC were equal to the task keeping them out on several occasions in the first half. UQFC took a surprise lead when Logan put through their own net and the students went into the break in front.

Logan came out fighting in the second half and just ten minutes in, influential goalscorer Michele Lipari found the back of the net and set up a very intriguing finale. UQ didn’t give in and were determined to come away from Chris Green with the win and they found the net with just five minutes to go but they just couldn’t hold on and deep into injury time Cameron Saint fired home for the hosts to claim a draw in what was a thrilling match.

A game of two halves at AJ Kelly Park where Peninsula Power hosted Albany Creek in what was a stark contrast in the fact the first half didn’t live up to much but the second had all the drama. A number of chances went begging for both sides in the first period of play and left the game on a knife edge going into the second half. The game was still a tight affair in the early excursions as Albany Creek hit the woodwork and Peninsula Power went close but no cigar.

The opening goal of the game arrived in the 68th minute when a defensive giveaway alllowed Creek in after a phenomenal run from Nasser Mehnat-Gir who glided through the defence and calmly finished past Jake Reesby to send the ACE fans into raptures on the grandstand. Power bombarded forward in search for the equaliser and they got it when Shaun Feuerriegel added another to his ever growing tally as he fired home into the bottom left hand corner. Power then raced clear and when Christian Smith brought down Matt Hornby in the box, he was red carded and the hosts were awarded a penalty,

Feuerriegel stepped up to convert the spot kick and the comeback was complete. Power were in for a third when Hornby was one on one and slotted home but referee Avi Cohen missed a melee in the background and his assistant gave him the nod to pull back play. There was to be no further score and Power picked up another three points.

Rochedale Rovers charged to a 4-0 win over struggling Taringa at a soggy Underwood Park on Sunday afternoon. Rochedale dominated the early phases of play which had been a familiar sight this season but the finishing touch just wasn’t there. Rochedale finally found the breakthrough in the 27th minute when Nick Wilson fired home for the home side and just 15 minutes later Seiji Shizuno doubled the lead to give Rochedale a two goal halftime lead.

Taringa didn’t offer much over the ninety and struggled to get anywhere in Rochedale’s final third and had more pain inflicted on them when Luke Howell netted Rochedale’s third of the afternoon with a 65th minute effort. In midweek Rochedale signed young pacy and talented finisher Mustafa Jafari from NPL Queensland outfit Olympic FC and just a few minutes after coming on as sub, made an immediate impact scoring the home side’s fourth to wrap up a 4-0 victory.

Lions FC put Wolves to the sword at Lions Stadium on Sunday evening rounding out a 5-0 win. Lions found life tough in the early part as Wolves caused some problems but weren’t able to turn pressure into goals and were punished for that in the 21st minute when Andre Bonotto was in the clear and calmly fired past Matt Carr in the goal. Lions then took it in their stride and raced on to score two more goals to have a cushion to sit on, firstly Kado Aoci was clean through and slotted home then a corner was driven in but it came off a Wolves defender and trickled in as the Lions took a 3-0 lead into oranges.

Wolves came out the stronger in the second half but again had no finishing touch in front of the goal and in the 74th minute were punished when former Wolves midfielder Alex Janovsky hit a lovely low driven shot past Carr into the back of the net. Lions rounded out the victory with a fifth from Kado Aoci in a game that saw Wolves Jefferson Woodward sent off with four minutes to go for a second yellow card.
