FNQ Heat’s Charlie Beverley has been named the inaugural winner of the Total Compression/Queensland Soccer News Player of the Month from the NPL for the month of March.

Beverley has made the shift from the left back position he played in previous years into a central defender position and has been a major contributor in an improved Heat defensive effort, conceding just four goals in the opening six matches.

“I’ve played centre back when I played at the nationals for Queensland in under 15’s. I really like it. There’s a lot more responsibility and I kind of like that feel that you get to read the play a bit more and get a bit more involved.”

Beverley attributed the defensive record to an area that was specifically worked on during the pre-season by incoming coach Tim Campbell.

“We always knew we were going to score goals because we have goal scorers in the team. Defence was one of the things we needed to fix up. Tim’s come in and done a great job defensively. It’s not just the back four but defending as a team from the front. We’ve really shut off that middle of the park so teams really have to go around us.”

The past few years hasn’t been without adversity. Beverley left the Heat in mid-2014 to pursue an opportunity in the UK but that stint was cut short through major injury forcing him to return to Cairns for rehabilitation.

“I’ve been injury-ridden pretty much since I was 16 and I’ve had three knee reconstructions since then. I had a full season last season and I’m just enjoying this season. I don’t know if that stuff will happen again (overseas opportunities) but I’m just enjoying playing for the Heat at the moment and see where it takes me.”

His Heat side have made an impressive start to the season, still undefeated after six matches. Travelling every second week means the team spends long periods of time together resulting in cohesion on and off the park.

“We’re such good friends on and off the field. If we have a tiff on the field, we sort it at training and it’s done. I think that’s why we’re doing so well, the camaraderie in the team, we all gel with each other which is really good to see.
